| Johann Sebastian Bach's "St. Matthew Passion" has been performed and enjoyed, in this form, since about 1740. It began to enjoy more wide-spread recognition in 1829, 100 years after its first production. The first English version appeared in 1862, and was first performed in America in 1874.
